多年生草本,具圆锥形根,长7-10cm,有少数分枝,成人字形叉张,根头多不粗大,具横纹,干后表面棕色或暗红棕色,纵皱呈棱状。茎直立,高约1m,中空,表面无毛,有纵条纹。基生叶具长柄,叶柄长达30cm;叶为二至三回单数羽状复叶,小叶片卵形或阔卵形,长2.5-4cm,宽1.5-3cm,先端尖或钝,基部宽楔形,两侧略不对称而下延,边缘有不整齐的锯齿,有时呈不规则浅裂至深裂,上面绿色,下面浅绿色,两面均无毛,常带粉或细小鳞片状物;茎生叶互生,中部以下的具柄,向上渐小并近无柄,简化成囊状膨大的紫色叶鞘。
